17th International Symposium of Theatre Critics and Theatre Scholars at the 69th Sterijino Pozorje Festival
Organizers: Sterijino Pozorje, Novi Sad, and the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC)
The topic of the Symposium is theatre and political correctness.
Political correctness has brought many improvements to social life that could be defined in the broadest sense as greater rights and visibility of the Other: women, children, the LGBT+ community, various minority communities, persons with disabilities… In countries where the rights of Others are threatened, standing up for political correctness is a means of struggle. At the same time, as the positive virus of political correctness spreads worldwide, inflation of the term also occurs. This leads to an empty form and empty words that become just another screen behind which essential injustices are hidden again. The Symposium answers various questions covering the connection between the theatre and political correctness.
This year’s Symposium includes speeches by 25 critics, theatre scholars, and professors from 17 countries and three continents.
The Symposium takes place on Monday, May 27th, and Tuesday, May 28th, at the Cultural Center of Novi Sad (the sessions take place from 9:45 AM to 11 AM, from 11:15 AM to 12:30 PM, from 12:30 PM to 2:45 PM, and from 4 PM to 5:15 PM). The entrance is free of charge. PhD Miroslav Radonjić, the director of the Sterijino Pozorje, will greet the participants. The chairmen of the Symposium are PhD Darko Lukić, an independent researcher (Germany), and PhD Marina Milivojević Mađarev, Academy of Arts, Novi Sad (Serbia), president of the board of directors of the Association of Critics and Theatre Experts of Serbia. The keynote speaker is Dr. Ivan Medenica.
